Abdulaziz Kamilov chairs CIS Foreign Ministers Council meeting

On May 12, 2020, within the framework of Uzbekistan’s Chairmanship in the Commonwealth of Independent States, a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held via videoconference.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov chaired the meeting.

The meeting was attended by the heads of foreign affairs agencies of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, as well as the Chairman of the Executive Committee – CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev.

The meeting participants exchanged congratulations on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Victory over Fascism.

The heads of the foreign affairs agencies of the Commonwealth considered current issues on the international agenda and interaction within the CIS, the state and prospects of increasing the role and place of the organization in international and regional affairs, as well as discussed a number of organizational issues.

The parties noted the importance of maintaining, under the conditions of quarantine restrictions, all existing and established mechanisms for interaction in trade, economic, transport and communication spheres, as well as the full functioning of the CIS free trade zone.

The heads of delegations emphasized the relevance of joining efforts of the CIS member states in preventing the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Special attention was paid to issues of strengthening dialogue between the foreign affairs agencies in ensuring security and stability in the territory of the CIS countries, as well as further development of cooperation in investment, transport, innovation, culture, sports and youth policy.

The parties supported the proposal of the Uzbek side to hold the next meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council in October this year in Tashkent.

Following the meeting, 11 documents were signed in various spheres of cooperation, mutually agreed decisions were made on all the issues of the agenda.
